In conjunction with the GAA's national Open Nights week the Cork GAA open nights take place in Pairc Ui Rinn next Tuesday and Wednesday evenings - an opportunity for fans to meet the stars. 

Training sessions take place in advance and are open to the public.

                 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Our Annual General Meeting took place recently in our clubhouse in Camden.  Even though a small number attended none the less it was a very productive meeting.

 

The following officers were elected for 2015.  President  J J Kelly, Chairman Martin McMullan, Vice Chairman James McSweeney, Secretary John Middleton Jnr, Assistant Secretary Gerard Ryan, Treasurer Ronan Cogan, Registrar Catherine McMullan

James McSweeney and David(Mattie) Walsh have taken charge of both Hurling and Football teams.  

 

We would like to wish all the officers,committee members and teams both Junior and Juvenile all the best for 2015

BOTH OF OUR AGMS TAKE PLACE NEXT WEEK IN OUR CLUBHOUSE IN CAMDEN.  THE JUNIOR AGM TAKES PLACE ON WEDNESDAY 21ST AT 7.30 P.M. AND THE JUVENILE ONE TAKES PLACE ON SUNDAY MORNING 25TH AT 11A.M. ALL MEMBERS AND PARENTS ARE REQUESTED TO ATTEND.

 

                             ANNUAL DINNER DANCE

We held our Annual Dinner Dance and Awards night last Friday evening in the Yacht club.  It was a great night enjoyed by everyone who attended.  Medals were presented to the Junior Football Team for winning the South East League for 2013. Hurler of the Year Award was presented to Dave O Brien and Footballer of the Year Award was presented to James McSweeney.  Well done to you both well deserved.  The Hall of Fame Award was also presented on the night and this year the the award was presented to Paddy Burke.  Paddy has been a great servant to Crosshaven GAA Club for many years from when he joined the club in the late 1960's until he moved from Crosshaven in the 80's. As well as being a player he did tremendous work for many years on the grounds in Camden.  Well done Paddy congratulations well deserved.
                            JUVENILE LONG PUC

A Juvenile Long Puc will take place on Sunday  16th February at 11 o clock.  This is confined to Crosshaven Juveniles.  Teams of four will be made up of one Under 12, one Under 10, one Under 8 and one Under 6.  It will start at Myrtleville Cross and finish at Brightwater.  Entries are to be given to your coach and must be in on or before the 9th February.  All competitors must be accompanied by an Adult.  Entry is €2.00 per child and all proceeds go to the Boys School Hall.  Presentation of prizes and refreshments will be in the Community Hall.  Remember this is a fun competition and a great way to start your GAA year off.

                           CORK COUNTY BOARD DRAW

The January Cork County Board Draw took place last Thursday evening in Johnnys Return in Crosshaven.  We would like to congratulate Teddy Lynch and Eileen Aherne who both won prizes at this draw. Congratulations also to all the other winners.

                     SUMMER CAMP 2013 

ONCE AGAIN WE HAVE COMPLETED A VERY SUCCESSFUL SUMMER CAMP.  A LARGE NUMBER  TOOK PART WITH  OVER 70 CHILDREN PARTICIPATING IN THIS CAMP FROM THE AGES OF 5 TO 13.

ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE CAMP WE WHERE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE THE CAPTAIN OF THE CORK SENIOR HURLING TEAM PA CRONIN AND FORMER CORK FOOTBALLER KEVIN KEHELY VISIT  THEY HAD  TRAINING SESSIONS, PHOTOS AND AUTOGRAPH TIME WITH THE LADS.  

OF COURSE THE CAMP WOULD NOT BE A SUCCESS BUT FOR ALL THE QUALIFIED COACHES FROM OUR CLUB WHO TOOK THE TIME TO BE THERE TO IMPART THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO THE YOUNGER MEMBERS OF OUR CLUB.    FOR THIS WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL.

AND TO THE BACK GROUND TEAM. IN PARTICULAR TO SERINA AND KATIE WHO SPENT THE FOUR MORNINGS KEEPING THE COACHES FED AND LOOKING AFTER ANY MISHAPS DURING TRAINING. EXCELLENT WORK LADIES.

THANKS ALSO TO JOHN MIDDLETON JUNIOR WHO WAS THE MAIN CO ORDINATOR OF THE CAMP ON EACH  DAY. HE  KEPT THE TRAINING SESSIONS RUNNING SMOOTHLY, AND ALL OTHER ASPECTS OF THE DAY TO DAY RUNNING OF THE CAMP.  WELL DONE JOHN.

         ANNUAL DINNER DANCE

Our Annual Dinner Dance took place last evening 8th February in the Royal Cork Yacht Club. A large number of over 100 people attend this event which was a very enjoyable occasion.  Amongst the large number of people in attendance were the Chairman of the South East Board John Middleton Snr, our President J J Kelly and the Chairperson of the Camogie Club Colette O Connor.   This annual event has become one of the highlights of the clubs calendar and at this dinner the following awards are presented.  Hurler and Footballer of the Year and the Hall of Fame Award.  Last evening we also presented certificates to people who had successfully completed Foundation Level and Level One coaching courses.  The recipients of these certificates were

James McSweeney and Redvers McGrath both received Level One Certs

Pat Murphy, James McCarthy, Adam Purcell,  Damian McMullan, Denis Middleton, John Middleton Jnr, Sean Pierce received Fountation Level Certs

Bernard Lynch,  Mick Noonan, also completed this course but were unable to attend the Dinner Dance.

Hurler of the Year was presented to Gearoid Harrington

Footballer of the Year was presented to Jamie Fitzgerald

John Fitzgerald was the recipient of the Hall of Fame award.  John has had a lifelong association with Crosshaven GAA Club, beginning his career at Juvenile Level were he played in all grades. At Under 16 he won a Hurling League Medal when Crosshaven were merged with Carrigaline in 1965, he was a member of the 1969 hurling team that won a South East Junior 'A' Championship, he won several other hurling and football titles down through and was awarded Hurler of the Year in 1976.

At committee level he has held a number of positions, including Assistant Secretary, Hurling and Football Secretary, Registrar, Chairman of the Juveniles, Vice Chairman and was Chairman of the Club from  1979 to 1982.  He has been involved in many other aspects of the club for many years and is truly a worthy   recipient.  

Congratulations to John, Jamie and Geariod on their awards and all our new coaches on achievements.

We would like to thank John and Fiona Middleton on organising the night, to all the those who donated spot prizes and to Peter Lee of Blarney Crystal.  

 

DIARMUID O MURCHADHA RIP

 

HE WAS A LIFE TIME MEMBER AND FOLLOWER OF THE CROSSHAVEN GAA CLUB.  A DEDICATED PLAYER AND SUPPORTER.  HE HELD MANY POSITIONS WITHIN THE CLUB AT JUNIOR AND JUVENILE  LEVEL, CLUB SECRETARY, VICE PRESIDENT, SOUTH EAST BOARD AND COUNTY BOARD DELEGATE AND AS A SELECTOR AT MANY GRADES.  HE HAS HELD THE HIGHEST POSITION SINCE 1995 CLUB PRESIDENT AND IT WAS WITH
DEEP REGRET THAT WE WERE INFORMED OF HIS  SUDDEN PASSING  ON TUESDAY THE 16TH AUGUST.
DIARMUID WAS A MEMBER OF A VERY DISTINGUISHED FAMILY IN CROSSHAVEN.   HIS FATHER WAS THE PRINCIPAL OF THE LOCAL BOYS SCHOOL AND WHEN HE RETIRED DIARMUID TOOK UP THE REINS UNTIL HE RETIRED HIMSELF IN 1989.  HE WAS ONE OF SEVEN BROTHERS..  
DIARMUID HAS BEEN A GREAT SERVANT TO CROSSHAVEN GAA FOR A LONG NUMBER OF YEARS HE WAS A PLAYER ON THE  1952 JUNIOR FOOTBALL TEAM WHO WON THE SOUTH EAST. OF THE TWO CODES GAELIC FOOTBALL AND HURLING,  HURLING WOULD HAVE BEEN HIS FIRST LOVE. 
HE WAS THE AUTHOR OF THE HISTORY OF THE CROSSHAVEN GAA WHICH WAS PUBLISHED IN 1984 FOR THE GAA CENTENARY YEAR.
EVEN THOUGH HE WAS NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN A ACTIVE CAPACITY IN THE LAST NUMBER OF YEARS HE HAS KEPT UP A KEEN INTEREST IN ALL THE AFFAIRS OF THE CLUB.
IN 2007 HE RECEIVED THE HALL OF FAME AWARD FROM THE CLUB AN AWARD RICHLY DESERVED.
A WONDERFUL HISTORIAN HE HAS PUBLISHED MANY BOOKS DOWN THROUGH THE YEARS AND WAS WORKING ON ANOTHER ONE THE DAY BEFORE HIS SUDDEN PASSING.   TO HIS FAMILY SONS SEAMUS AND PADRAIG, DAUGHTERS  MIRIAM, BAIRBRE AND UNA HIS BROTHERS MONSIGNER DECLAN,  AND FR EOIN, SONS AND DAUGHTERS IN LAW, GRANDCHILDREN AND EXTENDED FAMILY WE EXTEND OUR SINCERE SYMPATHY.

He was a life time member and follower of the Crosshaven GAA Club.  A dedicated follower and supporter.  He held many positions within the club at Junior and Juvenile level , club secretary, vice president, South East Board and County Board delegate and as a selector at many grades.  He has held the highest position since 1995 club President and it was with deep regret that we were informed of his sudden passing on Tuesday the 16th August.
 
Diarmuid was a member of a very distinguished family in Crosshaven.  His father was the principal of the local boys school and when he retired Dairmuid took up the reins until he retired himself in 1989.  He was one of seven brothers.
 
Diarmuid has been a great servant to Crosshaven GAA for a long number of years.  He was a player on the 1952 Junior Football team who won the South East.  Of the two codes gaelic football and hurling, hurling would have been his first love. 
He was the author of the history of the Crosshaven GAA which was published in 1984 for the GAA centenary year..
 
Even though he has not been involved in an active capacity in the last number of years he has kept up a keen interest in all the affairs of the club.  In 2007 he received the Hall of Fame Award from the club an award richly deserved.
 
A wonderful historian he has published many books down through the years and was working on another one the day before his sudden passing.  To his family, sons Seamus and Padraig, Daughters  Miriam, Bairbre and Una, his brothers Monsigner Declan and Fr Eoin, sons and daughters in law, grandchildren and extended family we extend our sincere smypathy.

JOHN MIDDLETON CHAIRMAN OF THE SOUTH EAST BOARD

John Middleton is the new elected Chairman of the South East Board a great honour for John  as he is the first Crosshaven person to be elected Chairman of the Board it is also a great honour for the Club we wish him well in his new position  in the ever changing divisional structures within the GAA..Johnny was Chairman of our club for 16 years from 1988 to 2004 within his stewardship we saw the purchase and development of our pitch in Camden and the Building of our club house and dressing rooms.  He was also our first receipent of our Hall of fame Award in 2005 and a football Selector with the 1998 team that brought the South East to Crosshaven for the First time since 1966. He has been Vice Chairman of the Board for the past number of years and Chairman of the GPC and County Board Delegate. Johnny has been a true and great GAA man all his life and it is a accolade well deserved. Congraulations Johnny from all in the Club on a well deserved honour.
